Just saved myself $150 by fixing my jammed garbage disposal! Here are the key steps that worked:

Safety first: Always disconnect power at the breaker before doing anything

The magic tool: Use the hex wrench that came with your disposal (usually attached underneath) to manually turn the motor shaft. This breaks up whatever's jamming it.

Reset button: After clearing the jam, press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit before restoring power.

Most jams are caused by fibrous foods (celery, onion skins) or grease buildup. The manual crank method works 90% of the time and takes about 5 minutes.
