Struggling to find the right yoga mat thickness? Here's what actually matters
Published: February 23, 2026
After years of practice and testing different mats, here are the key insights that changed my game:
Thickness isn't everything - A 6mm mat might seem cushiony, but it can throw off your balance in standing poses. Most experienced yogis prefer 4-5mm for the sweet spot between comfort and stability.
Your practice style matters more than you think - Hot yoga? Go thinner (3-4mm) for better grip. Restorative/yin? 6mm+ will save your joints during long holds.
Floor type is crucial - Concrete studio floors need more cushioning than wooden floors at home. What works in one space might not work in another.
Personally switched from a thick 8mm mat to 4mm and my tree pose finally stopped wobbling. The connection to the ground made all the difference.
TL;DR: 4-5mm works for most people and practices. Go thicker (6mm+) only for gentle/restorative yoga or hard floors. Thinner (3-4mm) for hot yoga or if you prioritize stability over cushioning.
What thickness do you use and why?
