Long-haired cat owners: What's your go-to brush for preventing mats?
Published: February 22, 2026
Been researching the best brushes for my Persian and wanted to share what I learned:
Key insights:
• Slicker brushes work best for daily maintenance - they catch loose fur before it becomes mats
• Pin brushes are gentler for sensitive cats but less effective on thick undercoats
• Start with short 5-minute sessions to build tolerance, especially with rescue cats
The biggest game-changer was learning to brush in sections rather than trying to do the whole cat at once. Also, timing matters - right after meals when they're relaxed works way better than random times.
Anyone else struggle with brushing around the belly area? My cat turns into a pretzel whenever I try!
TL;DR: Right brush + short sessions + good timing = much easier grooming for long-haired cats. Slicker brushes are most effective for preventing mats.
