How to Quiet a Noisy Mechanical Keyboard in a Shared Home Office
Published: March 10, 2026
If your mechanical keyboard is driving housemates or pets nuts, try these: 1) Use O-rings on key stems to dampen bottom-out noise—easy to install and reversible. 2) Place a mousepad with foam backing under the keyboard to reduce surface vibration. 3) Swap in PBT keycaps, which are denser and quieter than plastic ones. 4) Add a small piece of felt or foam tape under the PCB if your case allows access—it cuts internal echo. 5) Type with slightly less force; many don't realize how much volume comes from heavy keystrokes. Works great for late-night work without disturbing others.
