Doorway pull-up bars: 3 things I wish I knew before buying
Published: February 23, 2026
Been through 4 different doorway pull-up bars and learned some expensive lessons:
Door frame compatibility matters most - Measure your trim width first. Standard bars need 4.5-6 inches of flat surface. Older homes often have rounded trim that won't work.
Weight distribution beats max weight - A bar rated for 300lbs can still damage your frame if the pressure points are wrong. Look for wider contact pads.
Installation style affects your workout - Screw-in bars are most stable but permanent. Tension bars work great but limit grip positions. Leverage bars offer best versatility.
Bonus tip: Test the bar height when hanging - you want slight knee bend, not cramped legs or full extension.
TL;DR: Measure your door trim first, prioritize pressure distribution over max weight, and choose installation type based on your commitment level and grip variety needs.
